How to you choose any Water Sports Life Vest
Choose a life jacket that is right for your body type. You need to first consider size, style of vest and material.
Tight is Always Right
When choosing any type of life jacket it should be really snug on your person. When you wear a properly fitted wakesurf vest or wakeboard competition life vest, it should be hard to breathe when you're wearing it. In fact, think of your life jacket as a second skin on you. There should not be any air between you and the jacket, because the air can cause bruised rips when you take a fall. Also, consider that most jackets have a tendency to stretch when wet. When you take a plunge, you don't want your wakeskate vest three inches off your shoulder and halfway up your face. Bottom line is, if you get an extra-large when, in fact, you're a large; your life jacket isn't going to be safe during any type of water skiing.
USCGA Life Vest VS. Competition Ski Vest
U.S Coast Guard-approved life jackets meet official standards for both buoyancy and impact protection. A competition or aka comp. vests are designed for pro riding in contests and they do not meet coast guard requirements, simply put, a USCGA life jacket will keep you afloat when your life is on the line; a comp vest might not for long duration. In many states, laws require you to use a USCGA jacket at all times, and you can be ticketed for wearing a jacket that doesn't meet official standards.

To make sure your helmet meets the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a standard that certifies helmet models that pass rigorous laboratory testing. Make sure you see a DOT sticker that meets these functions: Impact, penetration, and retention protection.
A true DOT helmet protects motorcyclists from impact by distributing the force across the outer shell during impact with absorbing liner, expanded polystyrene, or EPS. You should know that once you have suffered an impact, the shell and EPS systems are compromised and you'll need to replace the helmet.
Penetration protection comes from the outer shell, which is designed and tested against typical road hazards like rain, bugs and many flying objects.
The retention system must keep the helmet on your head during an impact. The DOT-certified models are tested for retention. How well your helmet fastens and stays on your head (chin strap).
